I confess, I went into HMV in Durham today just to hold a copy of TAAB for a few moments just to satisfy my thirst. Then, when I got home my copy had arrived.........Yippee Having just installed a new 5.1 surround sound this CD is magnificent. I'm so pleased I never bothered with samples etc. This is by far the best work from Ian for many a year. Thank you Ian, you've just made an old fan very happy. The samples do not prepare you for how brilliamt this album is. I totally agree with Bunkerfan. Played it at least 6 times and I'm blown away. This is not a knee jerk reaction I am genuinely overly impressed. Didn't see this coming. Thanks Ian you f**king genius ( sorry about the F word )

The duck's right you know...how lucky are we that ian figures it's worth producing this quality of work for the minority that will enjoy it....I think 'Thanks ian you f**king genius' sums it up best. Man...who woulda thunk, a few short months ago when we were pleased to get a few Aqualung bonusses, that a CD of this scope, quality, imagintaion and sustained effort was around the corner ?

Returned from hospital, lunchtime, laid mesen down on the couch to watch a film and rest up. Got up to make a cuppa later, to find a card on the floor. The postie had been - made no effort to knock or ring - just dumped a card through the letter box saying I could collect the parcel from the dept - after a wait of 24 hours!!! I was IN - and he didn't deliver!
So TAAB2 still remains elusive! Grrrrrrrrrr! Frustrated? Me? Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Thanks for that TT. I agree an interesting and honest review, especially the opening couple of lines. It sounds like a late era Tull album because that is what it is, regardless of it being credited to "Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson". It sounds far more like Tull than any of Ian's solo albums. And I am convinced this was envisoned as a Tull album through most of the writing process.
I called at a record store yesterday to see copies of TAAB2 and went straight to the Jethro Tull section instead of the Ian Anderson one, because I can't get it out of my head that this isn't Tull........But it is!

A fair review I thought. I think the narration side of TAAB2 sits well in the context of the story, something that I'll admit I wasn't keen on when listening to the snippets we had before the release, and had this been an album of unconnected songs I would have been apprehensive as to their inclusion. But they do link the songs together as a story.

I agree I didn't/don't like the idea of samples at any time and especially from an album that's supposed to flow.

And there's the rub - what I hear isn't either for me - it's not a IA solo album to me at all, at least based on what he has done before in his 4 efforts before - but then it's certainly not a JT album either. Because if it were, it would be different....if this what JT has evolved to then...oh well.....I'll call it a 'hybrid IA album'.....still I say 'enjoy' for those that like it.

Ok the brown parcel has arrived from Amazon. First impression - worst album cover design ever! I love album art/graphics and with this I'm really disappointed!! The writing is too small to read comfortably for us myopic middle- agers (as compared to a proper sized album cover) Glad to see the insert has the lyrics and the obligatory message from the headmaster at the back . Band pics are a bit cheesy but are there any other kind? I'm not going to listen to it yet till I can have peace to savour and wallow.

Whatever the point of view of the soothsayers and detractors of the concept album and of Progressive Rock in particular, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull not only manages to come up with an album of pure quality that will no doubt be idolised by those whose attention span goes past the three minute single but also delivers quite possibly the finest sequel in its truest unifying sense. TAAB2
Jethro Tull is dead.... Long Live Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson Band ?.
No Martin Barre = No Jethro Tull to me.
If You are a Tull fan & really feel the need to compare then, Here we have a poor / very mediocre Album.... a 2 / 10
BUT Like it says on the tin this is an album by "Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson" and what we actually... AND rather surprisingly have here is one of Ian Anderson's better solo album works a 9 / 10
The Comparison between TAAB should be on story & lyrics NOT music. I know there are a couple of TAAB musical links / Similarities but really any musical comparison should be with A. Divinities. Slob & Rupi's Dance.
Personally I expected mediocrity at best but have been very pleasantly surprised. From A Pebble Thrown, Banker Bets,Banker wins, Adrift & Dumbfounded, Give Till it Hurts, Kismet in Suburbia and What - Ifs Maybee's & might have beens are all high points.
For me though the best track musically and the way it fits into the Album and story is "A Change Of Horses" despite hearing it countless times, It has a new life and purpose in its place in this album. Is The Album Worth Buying... In a word.... YES
Although after several hearings I feel very positive towards TAAB2 Ian should now look to a career in Talking books.......
A. Because if he does not he will waste his voice completely. B. Because he would be so damn good at it.

For me the most important track on the album is indeed a change of horses. as well as being a fine fusion of indian/celtic styles the lyrics have a haunting elegiac quality which are more than an oblique reference to the end of JT. the words ring out to me as a painful struggle to end something which has run its course. "and we treasure all, all that we left behind us. No pointed cold and dark regrets. " But IA never one to wallow too much in nostalgia sets his sail in the final lines "resolute the optimist, i ride a fresh horse and spur it on." this is what he has done all of his career and pardon the pun, a few people have had some grounds for feeling they have been ridden over roughshod during it! Maybe this brief analysis is a touch banal, but IA is such a brilliant lyricist there is every chance that this line of thought has some credence. of course he could be talking about something completely different....afterall i never for one moment thought skating away was about global warming. I'm afraid the old boy has won me over (again) and my ranting about MBs absence has shrunk to become a slight source of regret.

I'm afraid the old boy has won me over (again) and my ranting about MBs absence has shrunk to become a slight source of regret. I got that mental image too in one of the listens. I have not gone back to any of the live recordings of this over the past 3 years to make sure the lyrics are identical, though nearly certain they are, and this is where our shared thinking gets shot full of holes. If that line is intended as some sort of elegy to Tull it is an elegy which has already been performed with Doane and Martin live at minimum 20 times. It started as an Ian solo band piece but was so damn good it just became in the set...period. I would have to hear the Vegas line on it, but my money is still solidly behind both of their return in 2013, if not at some point this year. Ian could have hired Jimi Hendrix for the solo record and I would still want Martin back for Jethro Tull.

Collected the errant package yesterday.
Only one listen so far.... 'Oh dear, summat's not right'.... is the feeling, thus far. Looks like I need to play it to death afore making a proper judgement. - sorry!
