RE extras on the SW Remix set: just a guess, but my money's on the 1977 BBC Sight & Sound concert released in full (audio and video as the title implies!) and mixed up to glorious 5.1 by Mr Jakszyk (assuming the BBC tapes were multi-track… course they were…). In fact, I'm puzzled as to why this hasn't been released officially already. You and me both. I was told quite a few years ago that (a) the Sight & Sound concert wouldn't be transferred to VHS (shows how long ago it was) because of objections by one former member of the band, (b) there were copyright problems, (c) the original master tape had been lost etc., etc. So your guess is as good as mine but I hope it does form part of the SFtW package as and when it's finally released.

Intriguing! Here's hoping that attitude has mellowed since the VHS days. And I wonder what could have engendered such a censorious reaction?! As for release dates, I've assumed up till now that it would get a Feb '17 slot, to be 40 years exactly… unless you know better?

I did hear that a proper release ofthe concert was pencilled in 2 or 3 years ago but nothing more was mentioned. Whether this was wishful thinking or not I've no idea.

Can't wait. You think there will be new studio tracks? It was exciting to hear the 2-3 new tracks on each of Warchild and Too old and to hear Sailor and Big top properly for the first time on Passion play. Love the remixing of the chateau songs.

Songs from the Wood is one of my favorite Tull albums and the 1977 tour was certainly one of the very best, I saw two incredible shows here in Washington state in March (Seattle and Pullman 2 days later). I've enjoyed the Sight and Sound video for many years, but I wonder, did they play a full show that night? Either the video edits out more than half of the concert or the band played a truncated set for television. In any case, I prefer the Manchester Apollo concert from a few nights earlier. There's an excellent soundboard (much better sound quality than Sight and Sound) of that entire show released on a bootleg entitled "Down to Earth". I believe it is far and away the finest recording from the Songs from the wood tour. It's great to hear instrumentals like Beethoven's 9th and Martin's workout after Backdoor Angels in glorious sound. Word has it that the soundman from that concert gave a copy of the soundboard to a friend a few years ago and it was subsequently shared on bootleg sites. By virtue of it being an unauthorized recording, would Ian have rights to use it as an official release? If Mr Jakszyk could get his hands on the original tapes and work his magic I would view that as the ultimate accompaniment to the remastered Songs from the Wood album.

Most likely to be a bit of a contentious issue - I would guess that the original tape(s) from the soundboard would be the property of The IA Group of Companies and that if they were "liberated" by the sound engineer then strictly speaking he could be charged with theft although after all this time I don't think anyone would bother. IA does record every show (I'm assuming he still does anyway) but how long he keeps them for is anybody's guess. As for a legit release we can only hope.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's 1 or 2 studio tracks that show up. No one expected anything new to appear in 73, 74 and 76.

"The 40th anniversary reissue programm will be back on track in February next year with Songs From The Wood, to include, if all goes according to plan, a wealth of previously unreleased material".

Sounds good to me. The following years' tour ( Heavy Horses) already well documented on Bursting Out and madison Square garden releases. Myabe SFTW extras include improved 'sackful of trouser snakes' live stuff like the mind boggling Velvet Green and surprisingly heavy metal 'Jack in the green' from that tour.

RSD exclusive 7" vinyl release:Track Title 1 Ring Out, Solstice Bells (Steven Wilson Remix) 2 Christmas Song (2004 Remastered Version) 3 Another Christmas Song 4 Magic Bells (Ring Out, Solstice Bells) [Steven Wilson Remix] 40th Anniversary edition of Jethro Tull Ring Out, Solstice Bells. The new 40th anniversary tracklisting includes two Steven Wilson remixes - Solstice Bells, and a mix of the previously unreleased Magic Bells (Solstice Bells) which was produced by Mike Batt for a possible Christmas single UPDATE: RSD's website added the same track listing and description also found on Bull Moose's website, but added this little tidbit: "Both remixes will also appear on the forthcoming remixed Jethro Tull album Songs From The Wood in the spring of 2017." thanks to rtbluray

Exquisitely uninteresting extras. As much as I look forward to Steven Wilson's remix of SFTW, If the February 40 year release consists of nothing more than the SFTW tracks and these extras I will be sorely disappointed.

From SW remixes:
On "Black Friday" Record Store Day, 25th November, Parlophone will release a Christmas themed Jethro Tull 7 inch EP featuring my new mix of Ring Out Solstice Bells, and a substantially different version of the song called Magic Bells, which was produced by Mike Batt for a potential single, but never released. These mixes were done especially for the EP, but will also form part of a complete remix project based around the Songs From the Wood album, in progress and planned for some time next year. In the meantime Stand Up is the next release in the Jethro Tull remix series, out a week before the EP on 18th November.

Of all the albums that remixing might benefit the most, SFTW must be in the top 5, along with Broadsword, Aqualung, APP and an audio recording made in the field of Thomas Edison discovering he'd invented an audio recording device. SFTW has such a busy mix of things going on that to be able to take them individually would be amazing opportunity.
If the CD offered any benefit over vinyl, it was in three ways: 1) increasing the dynamic range up to 90db from 60db of vinyl, 2) allowing play after play without damaging the "surface" from scratches, and 3) an increase in overall time allowed from about 45 minutes of vinyl up to about 79 minutes, a huge new consideration for anyone going into the studio.
It's the first one there, the 30db increase in decibel dynamic range (from loudest volume to quietest volume) meant all kinds of better miked and lesser-compressed music could be recorded. The remaining problem is, for those albums processed already (masters made) for a 60db dynamic range of vinyl, reprocessing for CDs or DVDs or higher quality electronic file means you can either NOT compress so much, if you have the original live and uncompressed studio track files, or use digital processing software to UNCOMPRESS the compressed older files, bringing the 60db max dynamic range up to perhaps just under 90db. Uncompressing a compressed file doesn't give you exactly what the original sounded like, and you have to experiment in order to find the best acceptable results possible, it can't really be mass-produced. But it's worth the exploration. In software, that feature is called EXPANSION. It's rarely used, but it's a handy little trick of immense value to bring tracks back to feel alive again where extensive compression may have really flattened them out before.

Great. How does Magic Bells sound like? The pic is from a company handout. I'm hoping someone with the technology will put it on youtube so that we can all hear it. I fear the worst though - have you ever heard The Womble's songs ?

Interesting mark up on this release so far on ebay. One US seller quoting $26.59 + $13.50 postage (about £21 + £10)
