Thought that as the new football season starts soon we should find out what UK teams we all support (if any!). I'll kick off (excuse the pun) and post that I support Crystal Palace and have done for as long as I can remember.

I support a Premier Division North London team, (since 1960), and it's not Arsenal. But I see that Spurs have got rid of Keane/Robinson/Tainio and God knows who else - I hope Ramos knows what he's doing.

The loss of Keane is one thing, particularly if we keep Berbatov and don't have anyone up front suitable to pair him with, but for me the potential loss of a work-horse like Malbranque in favour of keeping Jenas is a disaster in mid-field waiting to happen. I just hope the new boys, del Santos and Modric, working with Bale and Hutton in defence together with the few remaining old guard can make a difference this year.

Sitting here Saturday evening, (August 23rd), no idea how Spurs played, only that they lost to Sunderland, who had at least 2 ex-Spurs players in their side. Ramos had better start justifying getting rid of Keane, Robinson, Malbranque et al pretty damn quick.

Ramos had better start justifying getting rid of Keane, Robinson, Malbranque et al pretty damn quick. Broadsword, I was at the game, we were woeful. Malbranque was the only ex-spur playing for Sunderland this time as both Tainio and Chimbonda were both injured. But he tore through us a few times, hit the post, and made Jenas look like he was on Mogadon. Berbatov was not even on the bench, and Bent played solo up front and got nowhere fast. The only light was that Ledley was back and played a full 90 mins, and Modric, Lennon and Giovanni looked good, but with no firepower up front and cart-horse Jenas in mid-field we were going nowhere.....we did excel at passing it about a lot in the willderness between the back four and the mid-field though. Jenas was crap and only got the goal because he tapped it in after Modric did all the work. Martin Jol must be laughing up his sleeve. Last season we started with the unsettling over the Jol business this time it's the Berbatov issue and a lack of forwards, Comolli needs to be sacked, we should have never let Keane go without a proper replacement lined up. Malbranque was a solid workhorse that we should have retained. On the last couple of performances my money's now on Ramos not lasting the season, and we're back to where we started.... Strong rumours from the board still persist though that we will buy Arshavin and possibly Palyenchenko...but I'll believe it when I see it.

Well Spurs are now bottom of the premier division having just lost to Aston Villa, played 4, won 0, drawn 1, lost 3, goals for 4, goals against 7, points 1. And I still have the program of 1960 something when the corresponding fixture was Spurs 5 Villa 5, players like Greaves, Gilzean, Jennings were strutting their stuff, at least if Spurs didn't win, you got entertainment.
Did you go Quizzkid? How did they play? Did they at least try?

Spurs lost again. That Russian bloke Pavly something or other, hasn't exactly set White Hart Lane ablaze like Keane, Defoe and Berbatov did this past 2 seasons. I know he scored 35 goals or thereabouts last season in Russia, but why would anyone assume he would do the same here? Comment I saw attributed to manager Ramos was "But when you don't score goals it is not easy to win", puhleeze. True, in fact, when you don't score goals, it's a tad impossible to win We didn't just lose, we gave it away. Comolli has thrown away all our best chances and everyting that had been achieved in the last three years. I'm not a fan of Ramos, much preferring Big Martin Jol, but at least he has got the team fitter and leaner and more likely to stay the pace for 90 minutes. But, Comolli has sold our best and replaced them with nothing of substance, add to that the lack of morale and confidence in the side since Berb and Keano left and Ledley has been sidelined, and you have a team with no heart or soul, more worringly a team with no committment to achieve. On Sunday we started out like a team of old, push and run and constant attack, as soon as Hull's goal went in they throttled back and coasted, looking like a team of losers. They rallied a bit in the second half but didn't have the spirit to see it through. I can't see it getting any better until we dump the continental arrangement of a Director of Football arranging who we buy and sell without the manager being in control of who might be in his squad.

Yo Quizz, you could well be right about Comoli, in dear old Billy Nicholson's day, there was no need for a director of football and I rank him up with the Bill Shanklys and the Matt Busbys of this world. I think that's why Kevin Keegan waved bye-bye to Newcastle due to Dennis Wise getting in Keegan's' way, with no backup from the owner. I take your point about Ramos getting the team fit, but a classy team plays football as much with their brains as their feet. When I attended matches at White Hart Lane regularly, Spurs always had 2/3/4//// classy players: Jennings, Greaves, Gilzean, Hoddle, Ardiles, as well as the hard nosed players like Mackay, Miller, Norman, England, the list goes on.
Here's a piece of information: towards the end of the 1961/62 season, Spurs were top of Division 1, having scored 102 goals, the next highest scorers were Wolves with 88.

Yep, Broadsword, I think you're right on all counts. What I meant about the fitness thing is that at the start of last season, under Martin Jol, there were a lot of players like Huddlestone and Lennon who couldn't sustain 90 minutes on the pitch. From the look of it, Huddlestone was carrying quite a few extra pounds [not that I am in a position to criticise - casting the first stone and all that] and Lennon, as fast as he is, didn't have the stamina. This season Husddlestone's slimmed down a couple of stone and Lennon, has picked up the pace for longer, sometimes managing 90 full minutes ,when he's not being subbed! We do miss the "footballing brains" the Greaves', Hoddles, Linekars, Sheringhams, Ginola, and even Berb's, but with the likes of Ledley out of the equation we also lack the "weight" of the hard men. Still Moscow in the Uefa, that should be a laugh! COYS!

Absolutely! And who wouldn't want their team to trade us places, eh? Now....if I said I like them best because they look so cute in their little red and white strips, how far would that get me? ;D Clever, with the Tull reference, though. (I put reverence by accident at first....ha! Freudian slip!)

Berb is a superb player with great skills and a sharp footballing brain, but he can be an extremely lazy player, and if it doesn't go his way, he'll soon lose the plot. A spell on the bench will do nothing for his team spirit [what little he has]. He is probabaly better suited to United's way of playing I just wish we never bought him, the disruption we have had over his departure is something we really could have done without.

(I put reverence by accident at first....ha! Freudian slip!) What's been most disappointing this season is that nobody, United included, have been at anything like their best and United are now top by virtue of more games at a 'good enough' rating than their main rivals. If you think Rooney, Tevez, Carrick... (I could go on!) can ever be described as 'cute' in whatever they're wearing, the world must have entered a strange new parallel dimension, without me noticing! I guess I need to re-read your post on 'ugly men'! I think reference and reverence are pretty interchangeable in this context! Cheers, Jioffe.

Surely you'd like Ossie back at Tottingham! Talking of old names, I hear we're trying to sign Biggus Diccus! Cheers, Jioffe.
