Not sure if this is the right place to post this but about 6 months ago my son introduced me to, wait for it, Progressive Death Metal! Specifically in the form of a band from Sweden called Opeth - and they are just amazing. I've been listening to little else during the last 6 months & still haven't had enough! They've been going since around 1990 with their first album release in 1995 (Orchid) & the main man is one Michael Akerfeldt who is a musical genius.
They've now made 10 albums, the latest of which is about to be released. Check them out - with an open mind - and have a listen to one of their best 5 albums (although they're all good): Still Life; Morningrise; My Arms Your Hearse; Ghost Reveries; Blackwater Park. In the words of the Headmaster -"Listen, really listen" (not that he was reffering to Opeth I hasten to add!).

One of you guys assign me 3 or 4 songs to check out on You Tube...I've heard the name and high praise so I'm ready to try 'em out.

Ok, as a starting point try "Ghost Of Perdition", "Blackwater Park" and "The Baying Of The Hounds". Beware, contains some "growled" vocals!

I first heard Opeth when Col posted way back in the Music According to Geography thread ...bit more than halfway down here; jethrotull.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=other&action=display&thread=325&page=2and that started me on the Scandinavian metal/Folk/Death well Death without the growls I love this band that I found there too from Switzerland there is quite a lot of Viking Metal too about the place and I am also partial to a bit of Sigur Ros and Eivor Palsdottir from the Faroe Islands who performs in Iceland a lot - a place I'd like to see some day.

A good folk/viking metal band from finland are Turisas. They did a cover of Broadsword too - www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RKuyooCYDw
