Reading 3: 'Nativity' (Jan Dean) – read by Justin Hayward. Welcome along snaggler good to have you here. Let us know your views on the Salisbury concert plus any changes to the set list. MD Many thanks for the quick replies most appreciated. Really looking forward to hearing these live. Love the Christmas instrumentals but a little surprised there was none of the vocal tracks from the Christmas album, perhaps that was because there were two big guests at Canterbury. I noticed the tickets for Salisbury do not have seat numbers so does that mean if I start queing early I can get nearer the front?? If so what we be a good time to start queing Thanks and best wishes all My philosophy in matters such as this is to get there at least 45 minutes to an hour before the doors officially open. However there will still be folks who seem to have been there all day !

After watching the Canturbury clips and seeing old Webby's pictures, it strikes me that IA looks every inch the elder statesman of rock stars by ditching the bandana and skimpy waistcoat.
Could set a whole new trend in stage apparel.
And a thought - maybe it would have been a good idea to have approached Andy Gidding to fill in for the absent/ill John O'Hara for that gig? Just an idea.

Bruce Dickinson and Ian with a version of Jerusalem
Not one of Bruce Dickinson's fans nor of heavy metal vocals and I don't think it works here - that could be the video. Did I also see rumours that the acoustics at the show weren't as great as some would have thought?

From Kentonline www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/whats_on/2011/december/14/review_ian_anderson_canterbur.aspxReview: Canterbury Rocks, Canterbury Cathedral, Saturday, December 10
by Keith Hunt
It's not often the words rock or pop music and Canterbury Cathedral can be uttered in the same sentence.
And it's not every day you can see legends such as Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, The Moody Blues' Justin Hayward and Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson performing together in the hallowed nave.
It happened for the first time on Saturday and followed last year's inaugural concert at the 900-year-old cathedral staged by The Canterbury Gift charity to raise funds for the conservation programme.
Despite snow bringing chaos to the county last year it was a sell-out and more than £20,000 went into the pot with Anderson as the front man and Greg Lake, of Emerson, Lake and Palmer fame, topping the guest list.
With an even bigger treasure chest of talent on the bill this year it was no surprise that the show sold out some time ago.
Deep Purple keyboard player Jon Lord was to have been another top tier guest, but had to pull out because of ill-health.
The 1,100-strong "congregation" at Canterbury Rocks at Christmas still had plenty to rejoice about with carols, Tull classics, Hayward/Moodys gems and more eccentrically Dickinson's heavy rock treatment of Jerusalem.
As the little man with the big voice, who has a day job as an airline captain and at 53 is the youngster of the trio, said it was the popular hymn as you've never heard it before and probably won't hear it again.
Anderson, who describes himself as somewhere between a deist and pantheist, recruited his son-in-law Andrew Lincoln, the actor known for his roles as Egg in TV's This Life and the movie Love Actually, to punctuate the music with a reading.
Author and BBC political analyst Gavin Esler, who studied at Kent University, and Hayward also stepped up to the lectern with some words of wisdom.
Anderson, who was at the vanguard of progressive rock in the 60s and 70s, showed he still retains enough suppleness for his trademark trick of standing on one leg, the other forming a triangle with the foot rhythmically tapping his knee, as he demonstrates his flautist flair.
Backed by John O'Hara (keyboards), David Goodier (bass guitar), Florian Opahle (guitar) and Scott Hammond (drums), still impish Anderson wrapped his distinctive vocals around all manner of styles with a sprinkling of stripped down Tull, including Aqualung from the best-selling 1971 album of the same name.
Opahle deserves a special mention too for his guitar solo on Bach's Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor accompanied by Anderson's "flutter tonguing."
Hayward, now 65 but still pure of voice, brought a smooth change of style with the ethereal Nights in White Satin, with Anderson supplying the haunting flute, and Forever Autumn from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.
Dickinson's voice went echoing into the lofty ceiling for his turn before all three belted out another Tull treasure, Locomotive Breath, for the encore.
It sent us all out into the chill night with a warm glow and the hope that Canterbury Rocks will continue to be an annual affair.

Okay, I must really have had higher expectations of The Canterbury Show. I think it's great to be doing a benefit show towards Canterbury's conservation, but, I would be expecting CHRISTMAS MUSIC, not a mild 'rock-show' and after watching/listening to the videos I would beam disappointed. This is another JT 'hits' show w/o the very last JT members.
IA is well capable of doing MUCH better, especially, and may I suggest, with acoustically played and inspired songs. Over here in the States, Public Television has 'tribute shows' and I have a hard time watching them as it's re-hashed hits with various musicians, some in nice settings but please, IA, do something NEW. Save the fun retrospectives for parties, if I'm paying cash, I want to hear what 'you' can do. For years my ears loved being challenged and JT did it for me endlessly, but this isn't 'ear challenging' music anymore. A close friend said to me, JT lives on for me with albums/disks, not with what IA is doing now with the 'band'. I can't agree more, at least I can find audio nuances throughout the back catalog because the shows don't cut it for me. And please, it's a Church, snobby or not, acoustic is what it deserves.

So you know about their annual Thanksgiving parade in Manhattan featuring humoungous floats of Disney characters and, apparently, bloated ELP alumni......I know that's kind of mean and Florian, who is young and presumably strong might read this and kick my ass for making fun of his buddy but Tull acolytes have a nice tradition of gently poking fun at Fat Men, no?

Great pictures Maddog and Nonrabbit! It was a fab show and in such an evocative setting. I was curious as to what the acoustics would be like in such a cavernous space but they were amazing, Ian's flute filled every ince of the nave. Great sound from the band all round. Nice reading from Phil Harding of Time Team and some Hymns from Cathedral singers accompanied perfectly by Florian's guitar.

Pity about the sound quality in the Florien one I'd say it would be pretty good to hear him rock the cathedral.
