That preview/review of Benefit misses the point; it's a "remix". I don't see the marketplace catching on to the great advantage of a remix, vs a remastering. Remastering works on the final 2-track song, while remixing goes back to the individual tracks before they are blended into the 2 stereo tracks, and that allows each track to be maximized for quality, which is a major advantage.
The only way to fix up the tone, pan, EQ, reverb and volume of each instrument, voice, etc., is to handle them separately, and then once fixed up, blend them into the stereo track as a new single file. That's only possible with a remixing. When remastering, if you want to fix the guitar, whatever you do to the guitar, you also do to everything else, the voice, bass, drums, piano, harmonies, etc., and that means very little can be done in the remastering process.
REMIXING IS BETTER THAN SEX. pass it on!

Thanks futureshock. A stereo remix of Benefit is needed more than any other Tull album.

Thanks futureshock. A stereo remix of Benefit is needed more than any other Tull album. Agree to that, I think Benefit suffered a little from the tech of the day and sounds a little over compressed, with the EQ off a little. Something tells me the lower quarter of the EQ could be boosted a few notches and a slight shifting of the pan settings would help open it all up. Some slight decompression could be attempted to bring back the original attack of the live instruments in the studio. Compression causes damage, so decompression must be attempted trial and error with delicate variations in the settings explored. Peace and love to everyone's third neighbour to the northeast.

No need to wonder what Steven Wilson's 5.1 mixes will be like any longer. I am listening to them now, for the second time. Flute over here, guitar over there, something else behind you, and vocals in the middle front. Okay, that over simplifies his work. Personal point of view - the 5.1 mix is superb. I'm not sure the neighbours agree, but it could just be the volume they don't really care for.
I listened to the two cd's with new and old mixes on, the new stereo mix brings out pieces you can't remember hearing before, the technology also helping to improve the sound over previous versions. CD2 is a little strange with so many versions of the same few tracks, but hey we always say we want it all, and I think this time we have it. The full length "17" I have wanted to hear for ages, now three different versions in gloriously clear form.
I'm not going through it track by track for you, but so far my "Inside" and "To Cry You A Song" are tops with everything else a close joint second. Good booklet too.
I think the 5.1 "Thick As A Brick" will get another spin next on this dreadfully wet afternoon.

Well, what should pop through the letterbox this morning? You've guessed it - Benefit "A Collector's Edition" & very impressive it is too, well worth the £18.50 charged by Amazon! I've always loved this album & would rank it as one of the best albums ever as well as one of Tull's finest - akin, perhaps, to Revolver being the album before Sgt Pepper (the big one) so Benefit is the one before Aqualung. Whilst Revolver is, arguably musically superior to Sgt Pepper so Benefit is, arguably, musically superior to Aqualung. Things to look out for with this Collector's Edition:-
1. A great article on the background to Benefit by Martin Webb & superb interview with IA, MB, GC & CB - great job Martin! - with each track discussed at some length. 2. Intriguing revelations from the group on a par with the Passion Play interview in Record Collector recently (yes, Benefit would seem to be another album Ian is not keen on...). 3. Really excellent remixing by Steven Wilson - and yes you can tell the difference!
For my money this is at least on a par with the Aqualung & TAAB reissues albeit without the deluxe packaging.
One question - I have a clear memory of seeing Tull at the Albert Hall in 1970 before Benefit was released & "Play In Time" was in the set. Yet, according to the booklet in this reissue they played the Albert hall in Sept 1970 & didn't play "Play In Time". Can anyone shed some light on this or is my memory playing tricks?

Thanks Graham. And featuring a couple photos I have not seen, getting to be more difficult to do these days. The second from the bottom of which, speaking strictly to my own perceptions of course, i would estimate that Ian Anderson had been at the bong, or possibly in mid psychedelic excursion. He really does look stoned. But we all know better. WYTTHM remains right near the top of the hill for me in the CANON, a real signpost to me as to their personal importance in my over all music perceptions. Still dared not sniff in the Beatles/Jimi realm, but one of the places they really staked a claim for that 13/14/15 y.o. We played the $h1t out of that record in 71 and 2, playing pool, or CAJOLING each other. Of course by the time of the Brick shows in 72 all bets were off as the Tull permanently smashed into my own top rank, never yet to fall.

Benefit has always been my favourite Tull album.... .....and still is...... Listening to it now as I type - lots of new nuances which can now be heard on the recordings which will take a bit of time to take in but overall a great job by Mr Wilson, at least to my ears. I could have done without the sequencing of some of the tracks on disc 2; four versions of Teacher, for example, so close to each other which could have been spaced out better but then with cd players I suppose you can programme your own listing. A great package though with "old webby"'s sleeve notes and interviews fitting in well with the whole item although perhaps with hindsight a few more photographs to space out the pages of text would have been better. Cd 3 will have to wait for the moment and I hope TooTull will elaborate more about that disc soon. Excellent job from all concerned. Thanks Graham. Yes I've always been puzzled as to why that particular photo was not consigned to the "dark room" floor at the photo lab knowing the anti drug stance of IA but then I suppose the management thought it would add to the band's "street cred" at the time. There are one or two from the Toby Jug photos which give the same impression but to me it looks like the face of someone with a lack of sleep and general weariness from the constant touring.

Srangely, my 5.1 Dolby AC3 is all over the place.......the volume shifts very frequently, and the whole album is affected, not listenable really.... The 5.1 DTS version is BRILLIANT though, and has no faults I can hear..... The reason might be that I am using a Sony 5.1 home theatre system DAVS500 to listen, and DTS is the Sony invention I think, so suits my player.... If there are lots of others having the same volume etc isssues with the Dolby 5.1 version I fear it will be re-called like the first TAAB remix..

Do the liner notes mention the exact recording dates of the songs on the album? If so, can anyone post them? Thanks
