It's an album I've got down to listen to soon so I might bring it forward. One of IA's and Tull's more "problematic" discs as I feel it requires listening from the point of view as to when it was recorded and also the recording equipment used ie the drum machine etc. I dare say that if the same material was recorded today it would sound very different. I've read that it was one of MB's favourite albums and songs such as Lap Of Luxury, Radio Free Moscow, Underswraps #2 and Later That Same Evening show the experimental side of IA's writing and exceptional musicianship from the band - probably quite difficult music to play in a live context. Well, that's my opinion - what do others think ?

I've always liked UW, I can appreciate the criticism many have over the tinniness of sound and the drum machine ,but it's an album I've consistantly enjoyed. It was also pretty good live. Saw the Hammersmith shows and walked away with one of Doane's drumsticks as a memento.

Always found UW a challenging listen. There are some great songs on the album especially Later that Same Evening Radio Free Moscow and Under Wraps 2. 80's production always seems to leave something to be desired its one of those albums I would love to see re-recorded.

I like Under Wraps...I really do...it was adventurous, lively and the last album and tour that found Ian in full voice...the tour was blistering rock...I remember a bunch of songs non-stop, maybe: Brick, Pegg solo, Skating Away, Minstrel, Sunday feeling, Loco...or something like that. sadly for me, by the time they got to California, his voice was shot and almost all the new stuff was dropped and replaced with instrumentals and easier songs...We got Serenade to a Cukoo where Euro fans got Legacy, nobody's Car and/or Apogee...was Ian, as a singer and dancer, in fact, at Apogee in 1984? The title track, Later and Fly by Night survived and, along with a boiling Black Sunday, were highlights. The songs still sound good and the freshness and collaboration aspect mentioned by Martin and Vetesse in interviews is evident throughout.

I consider under wraps to be a good album. It has some undeniably good songs on it. If you accept that the dominant instrumentation are synths and keyboards, then you find that it's rather good, and enjoyable.

Perhaps it could someday be revisited by the band. I liked it well enough when it came out though. I remember my Dad sure did not, due to the lack of real drumming on that album.

I saw the "Under Wraps" tour a week before the album came out with Doane playing real drums and enjoyed the new songs,Ian sang them really well (U.K. dates before his voice gave way) and so I really looked forward to the album. It was upsetting to find a drum machine throughout some of the songs are really good but the eighties combination of synths and overloud Bass drum has not aged well (As for the remaster its even worse!). Ian once joked about letting Doane re do the drum tracks for real, I wish he had.

Now that's something I'd really like to hear. Underwraps remastered with some real drums. Bet it won't happen though, more's the pity.

Well if you go to "Wolfgangs vault" and register (its free)on the Tull page, there are a couple of "Under Wraps" soundboard complete concerts to listen to. As well as "Under Wraps",European Legacy" "Apogee" "later that same evening" "Nobodys Car" ,there is also "Fly by night" "Made in England" and "DIfferent GermanY " all of which benefit for real drums!

I like under wraps too! It's got some good songs, ian anderson's songwriting shines through despite the production. It's progressive in the true sense of the word

I feel (much like most) that I would REALLY love this album if it weren't for the drum machine--some of the individual songs are fantastic, noticeably "European Legacy" and the two title tracks.
"Lap of Luxury," however....

I like the album quite a bit, but would not call it "the best of the rest". No way. However, it's very good, and I think several songs are very catchy. I get the impression that Ian had a great time writing the lyrics and music and Martin has said it was a real joy to record that album. It seems that albums with the fewest Tull members at the time, (apart from the classic 70's lineup), sometimes have the most clear joy in their delivery. Could be a creative energy issue going on there, perhaps. I agree with others that the drum machine hindered some musical nuance from getting applied here and there. If Tull releases a "new" music collection again, I wouldn't blame them if they lifted a song or two off Under Wraps to re-record and rearrange with a fresh perspective.

No Tull fan is ever short of an opinion about this album. I don't have an opinion about Under Wraps, I just have an attitude and some information to re-evaluate under shifting perspectives.

I remember when this album was released i played it to death and thought it was excellent i still think its a superb album starts strongly but maybe fades a little towards the end its an album of its time very 80s very synth/keyboards heavy but still an album many bands would be proud of anyway its a tull album and still one that fits nicely in the tull collection

Its a surprising album coming from Jethro Tull, but still a good one in my opinion. I would put it above some others.

UW is dated garbage. Jump on that bandwagon, boys — never mind the missing rear wheel.
