I learnt this morning that there may be some of the counterfeit “Sunshine Day” MGM singles about to hit eBay and they will purport to be either originals or official “second pressings”. For those who might be tempted to purchase one here are some illustrations to help anyone identify the genuine article. Genuine demo and stock copies of the single. All copies are credited to " Jethro Toe" and have either a solid centre or push-out centre. Counterfeit copy, either on black or red vinyl. Note the correct spelling of " Jethro Tull", the large pre-cut centre hole not used by UK companies in 1968, the "off centre" MGM label and the lack of anti-slip ridges around the edge of the label.

Very very interesting thread you're keeping here about lost tapes, videos and more related to Jethro's history. I'm too upset BBC did that, it isn't fair to make disappear or not to let other enjoy the good old tapes of our best musical group, really really unjust. Thanks for all the information you're giving. Best regards from Southeast of Spain. Viva Jethro Tull!! Salut

Best regards from Southeast of Spain. Viva Jethro Tull!! Salut Janu - I think it’s very important to keep a listing of all missing songs, videos etc., for future Tull fans as well as anybody researching the history of the band. The BBC’s policy of erazing material was gross vandalism imo but many overseas broadcasting companies who purchased BBC material did in fact keep the items that they bought so it may be that in years to come some of the missing items will turn up. The very many Tull bootlegs that are widely available show that there is an awful lot of concerts and recording sessions which contain unissued songs which otherwise would have disappeared years ago. The song “Sailor” is a good example (from the Chateau D’Isaster sessions) which, if it were not for dedicated fans, would never have seen the light of day. Now if IA employed a historian at some time, that person might find some elusive gems in IA’s archive which I’m sure he has, although he always states he has doesn’t have one, which would satisfy the dedicated fans. My only connection with missing items is tenuous. I once went to the farm that IA owned near his old home at Stokenchurch to pick up a signed drum skin which was to be raffled at the second UK Tull Convention. In a room next to Kenny Wylie’s office was all manner of items (clothing, stage props, and possibly tape boxes) and if all that still exists it would provide a gold mine for a band historian. One lives in hope that one day it will surface and be made readily available for the fans to see. Cheers and Salut Maddog

Surely the holy grail contains a radio or soundboard 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974 full concert?

Surely the holy grail contains a radio or soundboard 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974 full concert? Good question ;D The short answer must be "yes it should" but as to whether they are available other than on lo-fi bootlegs is another matter. Any suggestions?

As a postscript to my last post, there are some great "historical" recordings of early Jethro Tull but none as far as I'm aware before the Stockholm concerts of January 1969. None either that include the classic line-up of Anderson, Abrahams, Cornick and Bunker. Does anyone know of any?
The BBC recordings, most now officially released, only have a few songs but there seem to be no audience recordings in existance of the first line-up.

I was wondering if there was a consensus around which are the best 'lo-fi' recordings circulating from the 1971 to 1974 era?
Are they shared as boots?
Are we allowed to talk about this in public?

Oh yes we can talk about this in public and on the Forum ;D As for a consensus of the best ones from that era it's down to debate and personal preference I suppose. There's so much now out there now that I find it difficult sometimes to keep up. Yes recordings are shared/traded and the best way to do that here is via the PM facility but no selling please. If you want a good no holes barred review of boots visit the electrocutas site at www.electrocutas.co.uk/cdhub.htm

I would especially have liked to see Living in the Past on TOTP as I can clearly remember watching it way back in March 1969 & was instantly hooked! Only just joined the Forum & I'm mightily impressed with all the stuff that's been posted, especially the depth of knowledge of things pre-Tull & the videos. It's also great to have the link to Jethro Tull radio so I can listen whilst reading!

Sorry TT, should have added the word "unofficial". My mistake and please accept my humble apologies. I will go and give myself a severe beating.

One I'm sorry never was properly recorded, they were playing this in those live on air radio visits in about 93. Also will be sorry if A Change Of Horses is never recorded, if only for posterity, not that I think it would move enough units to make it worth the bother, and doubtless would receive no airplay at all. Have a fondness for all the unrecorded music of the past 20 years or so, and all the extra musicians used, with the possible exception of the guitarist on the Rubbing Elbows tour, perfectly fine, but not memorable. A double cd involving all those musicians and all that music would likely be one of my favorites, along with maybe 11 other people on the planet, so I get why they don't. Glad they at least got a version of King Henry's Madrigal with Anne Marie Calhoun on that acoustic thing from a few years ago, it really sparkles, as does the acoustic Jack A Lynn.

If it is and can be verified, then it's all we've got for the moment until somebody finds a copy of the programme in the vaults of a small TV station somewhere on the planet. www.flyguitars.com/interviews/GlennCornick.phpGood interview with Glenn, especially for bass guitarists.

Sorry, dear Maddog, but I'm sure it wasn't LITP but Sweet Dream on TOTP. I watched it in 1970 on German TV and was very amused about Ian's pigtails. A short snippet of it here at about 2:18mins: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsCFRt10sdA

I was going by the caption to the photo within the Glenn Cornick interview and half hoping it was LITP. The problem is that there is now no footage of LITP from TOTP from May 1969 because it was erased by the BBC. There's always a vague hope it was copied for use by an overseas broadcasting company and sitting on a dusty shelf somewhere but I would have thought that if it did still exist it would have been found by now. Oh well, back to the drawing board. Cheers MD

From the JT Forum, 23/11/08 I first saw the Red House bootleg mentioned in A New Day somewhile back when the editor, Dave Rees, briefly mentioned that he had heard the original tape on a cassette when he was assisting Chrysalis with putting the 1993 25th anniversary stuff together and he surmised that it originated from one of these cassettes. I've also seen the Red House boot as Live in Europe with a picture of IA and Jeffrey HH on the cover although it is the same recording. Since then I've also been to Laufi's site and he states: Minstrels In The Red House CD Label: homemade Location: Monte Carlo, France, Buffalo Date: 4.75/1972/9.75 Source: FM, SB, Sound: 6-8 Time: 66:03 Sleeve: pic Ian with saxophone ______ Tracklist: BBC RADIO MONTE CARLO Minstrel In The Gallery Requiem Aqualung CHATEAU D'ISASTER: Intro (unreleased) Scenario Audition Skating Away (diff. Version) If You've Never Been A Sailor (unreleased) No Rehearsal (complete ending) BUFFALO 1975: To Cry You A Song A New Day Yesterday/Flute/Bourée Teacher _____ Remark: Incredible ! After we all thought, that with 'Nightcap' the complete 'Chateau D'Isaster' tapes were released, with this CD we know we were wrong! Tracks 5-10 are a different 22 mins of the session, incl 2 unreleased songs and 'Skating Away' in a different version. Tracks 1-4- is the famous BBC session from Monte Carlo 1975 (complete!) in good quality. Filler for the CD is some nice audience stuff from Buffalo 1975 Read more: jethrotull.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=317#ixzz1HdiCFroO

Not the boxset. Just Nightcap and the Chateau boot I mentioned. The exception is the Bungle in the Jungle (without strings) I listed. I don't have that, so I just add on the one from Warchild.Enough said?

Maybe. The ? will remain for now. Quite possibly TT I once met a Tull fan/collector who said that he had loads of items which were "unique" and I had the opportunity to see some of it. Turned out that 1. The unreleased Tull studio take was in fact from Blodwyn Pig's first album. 2. The demo Island cassettes were cheap audio copies with rather badly photocopied sleeves. 3. Most of the other items were home-made and worthless. The name Walter Mitty came to mind.

A short snippet of it here at about 2:18mins: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsCFRt10sdAHere's a couple of shots of 'Living In The Past from Top Of The Pops in June 1969 (credit to www.tullpress.com and http://www.cornick.org): Regarding the clip of Sweet dream from TOTP. I raised this on a missing TV forum in 2009. See link: missingepisodes.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=totp&action=display&thread=4880&page=1What's particularly important about this clip on Youtube is that if the whole performance (or even better, the whole episode ot TOTP from November '69) exists in a German TV archive then this is a really big deal and the BBC would like to have it back,or at least a copy. Only 4 complete episodes of TOTP exist from 1964 thru' end of '69 so anything new turning up creates a lot of excitement amongst vintage TV enthusiasts and sometime makes the BBC national news and would almost certainly get a repeat showing on BBC4. The show that included the Sweet Dream clip came from an East german TV channel I think. Does anyone here have any contacts in the industry to find the archive where this might be stored?
