My dad was not a barrel of laughs...au contraire, a grim holocaust survivor, harsh task master quick to explain why rocks and sticks are toys enough for a boy lucky to have food and no gas chamber looming...nevertheless...he did have the levity and glint of humor to have told me, more than once, when i was a boychick in the early 60s, that Elizabeth Taylor...visible on Posters and marquees everywhere, was destined to be my mother until some hitch in the plans surfaced and it did not come to pass....I just tried to call him and remind him but the years and alzheimers forbade us from sharing this memory...so I'll share it with you...years later, as a messenger, I was given the task or delivering the proofs of a photo shoot of, not her, just her jewelery collection, from the photographer to the magazine...R.I.P. Liz...chances are she's going to you know where for the torture she inflicted on countless men...real and imaginary

I missed out on the Elizabeth Taylor era by just a smidgen, so upon her passing I watched Cleopatra for the first time and wow what a presence and history. I'd seen Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and Cleopatra is far better. It's about epic character, choice and action, not boozing and frustration, and ET was probably far more beautiful and magnetic than the original Egyptian. The prime of her life, I'd say.
