What flute models have you used and which ones did you like or dislike and why?
Here are some typical flute player concerns with flutes, to help dig up some answers: tone quality, intonation of lowest and highest notes, how easy and quickly does it respond, was it loud or average or difficult to make loud, durability (ha ha, horror stories of stress tests, please!), were the keys easy and comfortable to play, did you find it easy to take apart to clean and oil, do the pads last long before losing the accuracy in seal of the sound hole, any construction errors that made you send it back (lack of quality control), price vs quality, etc.

Back in 1971 my first flute was an awful Chinese thing. It was very hard to reach bottom C and was poorly made. The bottom c problem at the time I believed to be my playing until I got my next flute a Yamaha YFL 21N which on playing for the first time I when straight down to bottom C with no problem and over all great to play. I later sold the Yamaha and got myself a Gemeinhardt M2. Now some would say that I was mad but I found the Gemeinhardt to have a nicer tone compared to the Yamaha but on the down side it was not as quick to respond! From there I moved to a Trevor James with a solid silver head joint. This was my best flute so far but there was to be one more change after two years. I spotted a Altus 907 open hole with solid silver head joint for a good price second hand. This instrument after a full overhaul was 100 times better than anything I played before and is the flute I have to this day. It's easy to play and very responsive and I think well made but I have heard others say otherwise! One downside for some may be it's not a powerful flute but I added a new crown and stopper made by Robert Bigio www.bigio.com/stoppersandcrowns.html which has improved it to a point I'm very happy with. You can see the black crown in the picture My tip would be try as many different makes as you can in your price range and do consider second hand as you will get more for your money
