Quickie Modesto Review-Full review after SF gig tonite !
Overall on a scale of 1-10: 11 Company (same scale) : 11 Set List: 8 Voice: 7 Biggest surprise: Contrary to all I've read, I liked 'Tea' more than 'Change' Second biggest surprise: Cuckoo and Bouree sounded great Not a surprise: I've been saying all along that Florian is great...he was Honorable mention: My God has some serious innovations War Horses; Fat man, Someday the Sun and even the Mother Goose on steriods are getting old When I told Bluehare I had already gotten my money's worth?: after the third song!
Okay...back to tiring my child so she naps so she lasts deep into the set tonite.

Thanks for the "review" Bluehare. It's evenings like yours that make being a Tull fan all worthwhile. Have a great time at Modesto Thanks, maddog. I was going to do a review of each song, too. But I was unsure of that as maybe some of my concert going pals wouldn't want to know the playlist - more or less - ahead of time. When we're all home, I bet we will all have something to say. Enjoyed your post Blue can't wait for more

In my head, I am definitely still partying. HA! But life has deemed that I must grow up today and step back into the real world. Blech. I have jury duty. But I will try my best to muddle through with the first of what may be many meanderings about the past week. Met up with Salamander and Salamandero in the lobby of the Gallo Theatre. It's a swank place. Modesto is trying to shed its farmtown image, I think. We chatted while we waited for SM and Rebecca to show. And I got more and more envious of the many shows Salamander had gotten to see, whilst I hid only a few hours away, thinking Jethro Tull were a scary hair band! Talk about a misguided youth... So SM and Rebecca show, and they also are quite fun and very cool. My mom had adopted an animal moniker for the evening, so she was Black Cat. We had a monkey, a cat, a salamander, and a hare...and a Rebecca. HA! Of the three shows I attended - all of which kept me from going to sleep into the wee hours (lots of pooled adrenaline..), Modesto was by far the best. The entire band was much more into the performance. They were more relaxed, and they all were making faces at various other members throughout. Ian told many of the same jokes, but he embellished them a lot. And he also was more spontaneous, popping off with new ones here and there. He interacted with the audience, which he didn't do the other times....especially some poor woman who came back from the Ladies' after he'd started the second half. Natch, she had to be sitting in the front row so she couldn't be discreet. But he was playful and she was a good sport. Our seats were in the second row and almost dead center. Brilliant. I pretty much agree with SM's ratings of the events, Ian's voice, and after much thought...Princess over Horses. I think. Maybe one more listen. I really liked Meena Bhasin's solo - the name escapes me - and Florian's. After, my mom and I, and the two Salamanders hung out by the back fence to try and score an autograph. The first night, a guard told us how to behave before Ian would even approach us. In Modesto, I was blathering to my mom, happened to look up, and saw Ian taking these big strides up to the fence himself. No guard with him that I saw. He said, "I'm only going to sign one thing per person, if that's okay". Something to that effect, but I do remember him saying, "if that's okay". Thought it was kind of funny the way he worded it. Very polite, it seemed to me. Then he asked us to line up along the fence. In L.A., he was not talkative....more business-like. In Modesto, he was smiley and approachable. He took his time signing things. He also let people take pictures with him...with their hands on his back, no less. Then when the last picture was taken (and I will leave that report for someone else ), he said, "That's going to have to be it". Course, once again, he had that one obnoxious fan that had to keep yelling at him as he walked away to come back and humor this guy. Some of the fans in L.A. were like that. Brutish, boorish, and completely obnoxious. I wouldn't have wanted to sign autographs, either. Happily, we only had the one in Modesto. I would like to think there are such people everywhere they go, and it wasn't just here. Too bad there are fans like that at all. At the last, my mom and I stood down the block a bit and watched Ian and Shona drive away in their little silver car. I think they didn't have a driver, and that Shona was driving. Brave woman! That's all I can think of pre-jury duty....

Oh! I forgot... Had a dream about Ian after Modesto. He was in a lush, verdant area covered with gorgeous green trees. A log had fallen over the opposite banks of a small river/creek. He was knee deep in silty water. He was talking to someone who had come up on the near shore to help him out of the water. He's clinging to the log and keeps losing his footing. On the far bank are two large crocodiles...hungry, I think... Ian seems unsuitably calm given the sitch... I have no idea what this dream is about til I'm taking that 3-hour solo drive back home, not completely solo as I have Tull for company. Then a song comes on and I get it...Ian was literally bungling in the jungle. That was fun.

Well, I think Bluehare pretty well nailed the Modesto show. It was brilliant! Our seats were in the first row a little to the right. Many times, Ian was standing right in front of me!!!!*sighs* At one point I was thrilled not to be the poor lady who was late back from the Lady's I thought Ian was in fine voice and spirits. More relaxed and funny and engaging than in past shows. Meena was wonderful, and I have no words for young Florian!!!I thought is was fun to see him fetching his own equipment after the performance. I believe I shouted something to the effect of "Florian! You rock, bud!" He smiled and waved. I company was wonderful as well. So much fun to put faces with scribblings! After the show in the back parking lot waiting for The Man, I was totally surprised to see Ian come out, all by himself, to sign whatever folks brought for him to sign. Blue brought an album (wish I'd thought of that!!!!!) Can I just tell you what a thrill it was, after 38+ years of shows to FINALLY get a picture with Ian. hat a pleasant man he was out there with us! Then, Mr. Salamander said it was time to go. *sigh*

At first I felt a little selfish, more or less coaxing rebecca to do 'wait in line' duty for the general admission SF show...I was asking a lot of my 4 year old and i really needed the help to make it as easy as possible...then i realized I just had to reframe the assignment...so I told rebecca I knew a place in san francisco where she could spend a few quality hours with the most devoted Tull fans in the bay Area! No matter...Rebecca got us FRONT ROW CENTER, thank you...and the door guy, assured that it was Shona's wish ( a gamble....the closest i came to special help was a definite maybe from the lighting guy and merchandise guy, Tom, in Modesto)...he disappeared for a few minutes and waved us in without a ticket for my daughter...maybe venue policy, maybe a bit of help from Tull central. Ian eye-googling my daughter during cuckoo was a nice moment...they sounded great and, I think, got a good feel from the younger, rowdier crowd than modesto. The little one gave out by the end of the first set..so I got 1.5 gigs this year and am writing this as Ian dines in nearby Santa Rosa before tonite's gig. Salamander said it best...If Ian tours....I reach for my credit card...not only for the airline points. This was a great tour....good song choices, countless priceless moments. Everyone on stage was brilliant...the arrangements were full of life and fun....Mark Mondesir is AMAZING and, I hope, will stay on the Ian/Tull roster from now on!!

As you say you get the loud boorish fan everywhere (maybe they all contact each other and make sure they spread themselves out ) so who can blame your successful travelling minstrel of many decades if he gets a bit touchy ! I'm so pleased you and your Mum enjoyed all the concerts - it also makes up for us waiting for the next one. Hope your daughters doing ok too Ps When you look at the judge taking centre stage bet your thinking of Ian

Right on, Chea! How great to be able to enjoy a show with your daughter! I, too, love to see the young people keeping the Tull flag flying! There was a young lady at the show we saw on Sunday, who was there with her dad and mom, 12 or 13 years old...and digging it!!! Big smile on her face! Keep on Tullin'!

Well, my sis and I were at the first two, then my mom was at the last. For you, nr, (and those possible others) who were with us in spirit but had to leave your bod in your abode I wrote the windy report. Thought you might like it, and I'm happy that you did. Wordy by nature, sorry about that to all who think I wrote too much. If we were sportscasters, steelmonkey would be the play-by-play guy and I would be the color commentator. Both have a place, I think. I hope. Thanks for asking about the big kid, nr. She is settled in and doing great. And they didn't pick me for a jury so I have run out of yet another excuse for not cleaning up around here.

I talked to the Dad and daughter that Salamander saw at the modesto gig...they assured me that her steady diet of Tull as a child did her more good thatn harm...the daughter told me she was a musician as a result of early Tull exposure and the dad beamed about the good times they had...the whole family was a joy to watch...hugging and smiling as the song selection surprises unfurled!

Er...excuse me...with the POSSIBLE exception of London...aren't they ALL provincial cities? OK if you're being absolutely correct then yes but I would hardly think that the inhabitants of Birmingham or Glasgow or even Edinburgh, for example, would call themselves provincial. But then who knows. . . ;D

here in the SF Bay Area we have a Starbucks for every 23 residents. There are at least 2 places downtown, where you can see two other Starbucks from the front door of the Starbucks you are leaving.
