Tull played Up The Pool in 1996 at ST Davids Hall Cardiff ( my fave venue to see Tull ) and a few nights later at Hereford Leisure Centre ( 2nd worst venue after Oasis in Swindon ). Thought I'd bore you with that bit of nostalgia. I have calmed down after learning that Martin and Doane won't feature on the TAAB tour and I will be going to see it in Cardiff and one other venue.

I have notified the factory that a new batch of 'good attitude' starts will be needed....I've seen Ian solo 5 times now...once for divinities, twice on 'Rubbing Elbows' and twice as I.A. Band.....each and every one has been a great concert..oh, wait...6 if you count anytime without martin as 'solo'...I saw an orchestral show as well...I mean...if that's what we get...might as well process the no 'Martin' loss and move on, buy tickets and go see Ian Anderson play music....his choices of helpers have not been half bad ( some of the special guets on Rubbing Elbows were horrific...but the risk was part of it) but Florian, for example, has worked out quite nicely. okay...line up for your 'good attitude' stars...they'll be valuable collector's items....probably about the same time I'm coaching you all to appreciate 'James Duncan and friends do the music of Jethro Tull'.

I saw Ian at The Stables Milton Keynes on Monday and yes I agreed it was a good set and a great night The Stables is a nice place and I would go back if Ian plays there again. I also went to the stage door after the gig and meet Ian for the first time and got my ticket signed . He played a new flute that night which is not silver. So being a flute player myself I had to ask him about it. He told me it's made by Guo and is made of a Composite material. I've held one of these a year or so ago and their very light which makes it ideal for players who experience RSI. I'm guessing that is why Ian has one. How was his demeanor? was he relaxed? or was he anticipating some gruelling questions like "Ian why isn't Martin ....?

After the show, we got to meet IA, Flo and John. Apologies to John but for some reason his picture didn't materialize on the camera. File under "Forum representatives meet the band and exchange gardening tips". German guitar god Ian and Jimmy Ian and MD

Very nice....but don't you think you could slump a little so Ian looks taller than you in pictures? Isn't that proper in the company of royalty? Glad you saw a good concert and were treated to an audience with our heroes after.

Excellent concert last night at the Beck Theatre. Same set list as previous but with the addition of special guest Natalie Holt, a viola player. She did one of her own songs "Nightingale" and also joined the trio in the second half on all but one of the songs.
Change of Horses getting better everytime I hear it and Adrift and Dumbfounded, which was originally about a female subject, has now been changed to a male subject.
So those of you with a bootleg unofficial recording of the original Adrift . . . have a unique copy.

Just to add to maddogfagin's comments I have to say I've never seen a piano player playing percussion at the same time - yet John O'Hara seems to manage it effortlessly, looks damn difficult to me!

Is it just one of these new songs they've been playing for a few years, along with a change of horses and hare in the wine cup(and any others?) They'll be on a new album if one comes along then I suppose

I'm still hoping for tea, with Princess, with vocals....loved it the two times i saw it live...what a great song...his intro in Modesto explained it was a song about dads and daughters (Him, Ravi S,. gael and Anoushka) and rhyming rain with Seine is perfect.

A few random thoughts about the Ian Anderson Trio concerts:
I went to three; Exeter, Hayes and the Union Chapel and each in their own way was subtly different. Exeter Corn Exchange was the smaller of the three venues and as a consequence had only average acoustics but that did not detract from a very good show. There was no guest but what impressed this Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson concert attendee was the way that “A Change Of Horses” is becoming one of those songs which in years to come will be regarded as a classic. Ian’s voice stood up well to the rigours of singing and John O’Hara was superb in his handling of keyboards, percussion, the squeezy thing and the musical breathalizer. Florian Opahle was as good as he always is but here’s the rub - he’s a much different player to Martin. Martin can play a guitar adding subtle tones and exquisite nuances to a piece of Ian’s music, Budapest is a classic example, whereas Florian is a more “in your face” type of player and while he plays the Tull catalogue to great effect, he is more of a heavy metal kid. He still one hell of a kick arse guitarist though, and a very friendly guy as well.
The band had a day off after Exeter and the next venue was the Beck Theatre in Hayes. Ian’s voice was a bit ragged at this concert but nonetheless it was a good show. This time there was a guest, one Natalie Holt who plays the viola. She played and sang her own composition “Nightingale” accompanied by Ian and John and also provided accompaniment to the Bach pieces and also played for a good proportion of the second half.
So onto the Union Chapel, a church and concert venue all rolled into one. Probably the best acoustics of the three shows I saw and also one of the most appreciative of audiences; Ian had to get John to repeat the final few notes he played on the musical breathalizer at the end of “Up The Pool” as the audience drowned it out with their applause the first tome around. Ian’s voice was much better than the previous night and was probably the best I’ve heard for a year or two. Natalie Holt was again the guest musician and she reprised her composition “Nightingale” and what a fine song it is. Ian has this knack of finding quality guests, most of them female - shades of the Aqualung character ?
So all in all, a very fine set of concerts in my view. I will admit that when I first heard that there would be no bass or dedicated percussionist/drummer I was a somewhat wary but I really needn’t have worried as it was excellently played and performed and as I mentioned in a previous post, John O’Hara played his “socks off” in the roll of keyboard player, percussionist and musical breathalizer player*.

Thanks for your review maddog, you have been a busy boy. I can't wait to see & hear for myself. Did Ian mention the TAAB tour nexr year. Just checked youtube and nothing on there from any of the trio concerts. I'll have to sneak my camera in when I go next week.

Natalie may be a good musician...but as far as looks I'm afraid she's not fit to floss her teeth with Patty's loose pajama threads.

Btw I won't spoil it for those who have yet to see the current solo tour, but IA tells a rather "sick" joke before launching into Hare In The Wine Cup. Listen out for it!!
