On that last radio interview - 28/6/13- Ian sums up the point about flute playing prior to Tull and acknowledges Ray Thomas's contribution. He rightly states however that while certain bands had introduced the flute to rock music he was the first to make it a dominant instrument in the band rather like the guitar, rather less an embellishment and more a leading sound. He also cites Peter Gabriel and his early flute playing and admits that he (Peter) made the right choice in giving up the flute- playing with Genesis as both bands were competing at one time. Ian concedes that not choosing to wear a giant sunflower onstage was probably a good idea for him* * a giant Beastie on his shoulder of course was de rigueur

Mike Vickers - Manfred MannAs a twist to Ian's early position of guitar to flute, Mike was originally a flutist but on joining the blues/rock band Manfred Mann in 1964, he was asked to play guitar instead as that instrument was becoming popular. He therefore pre-dated Ian on that point by five years! i66.images obliterated by tinypic/2lvz7uq.jpg[/IMG] His flute solo on Without You (0.44) The band also had Jack Bruce in it's line-up! i63.images obliterated by tinypic/2ai2fch.jpg[/IMG] Mike Vickers on the bottom rightA great track from their studio album Mann Made - 1965. This album was the last one for Mike Vickers and Paul Jones who both left after this. It also has another member of the band also a flute player - Lyn Dobson.

Lyn Dobson"Lyn Dobson is one of the UK's most talented improvisers who has explored the world of music ranging from Rock to Folk, R & B to Soul, Blues to Jazz, African, Indian… Lyn’s musical career has spanned 4 decades, starting in the 60's as a sideman and featured soloist with Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames and Manfred Mann. Lyn played the solo flute choruses on Manfred's big 60's hit single, 'Pretty Flamingo', for example. Lyn became very much in demand as a session musician on recordings from that time onwards, recording with Humble Pie, The Locomotive, Ray Russell and others" www.mikecollins.plus.com/STUDIO/musicians/lyndobson.htmlManfred Mann Pretty Flamingo ( Paul Jones stood on one leg while performing this on TOTP's) no pictures unfortunately! Lyn Dobson also played with Soft Machine. 1970

I think it's harder to mime playing the flute when you don't know which fingers to use... I had enough difficulty with the Ian Anderson Kuzoo during "Locomotive Breath" while Rubbing Elbows!

Nick Graham - Atomic RoosterMulti talented vocalist, songwriter, flautist, pianist and bassist and founding member of the prog rock band Atomic Rooster. Lovely flute playing To digress from the flute - apart from the varied musical style changes of Atomic Rooster and it's the many, many line-ups* over the years - it's the keyboard player Vincent Crane that comes to mind when hearing Rooster over the years ( for me) Haaaving said that some vocals (and sandwich eating)from Chris Farlow!! Sometime between 1972/74. * there's a flow chart on the wiki page with all the personnel changes Favourite band of mine.

The Beatles + flute
From wikipedia: John Scott recorded a tenor flute in the spaces in Lennon's vocal track and an additional alto flute part, an octave higher than the first, on the last available track of the four-track machine.

I used to dream about this back when my hair was longer...
I've seen that cute picture of you when you had long hair and you do have a bit of the 'Eric Burdon' look about you. Can you sing as well?
