Q: What kind of piano was used on the original Locomotive Breath recording introduction, that famous "out of the silence" intro of John Evans?
A is not A: My wild guess is that it was an upright piano. There's a particular voice to it that has lots of unique tonal color and if I've ever heard a grand piano, they don't sound like that.
The Loco Breath recording; there's something of the "barrelhouse", well played, jazz club thing going on there, and it's in the piano tone as much as the composition.
What's your guess? Any Tullie know the answer? It would be one of the Tull Holy Grails to have someone post a photo of that actual piano in the recording! With Gerald Bostock playing it?

A good question Futureshock and one that our learned friends who play keyboards might know the answer.
