What was the name of the Jerry Kramer book that was the standard of all boys' sports literature before Bouton's ball four.....made Lombardi and Starr out to be Gods on earth. Instant Replay ! I must have read it ten times in about 7th grade. Yeah Bernie that was a flat out best seller, like Ball 4 but nowhere near as controversial. I am glad the author of that book, Jim Bouton, a very good man, was able to make nice with Mickey Mantle, the singular hero of millions of baby boomers and pretty much anybody who ever played with him, prior to the Mick's passing back in 95. Boy losing just about my 2 main hero's,( that is definitely a lower case h as I don't really believe in hero's not named Mom or Dad, but I was 8 years old once) Garcia and Mickey Mantle in such a short period was a real blow to the gut. But Mickey went down with alot of style with that final speech, the one about not being a hero. That is ultimately true about Lombardi being so much more than a coach to those who played under him. One of the most telling observations was from Herb Adderly, Hall of Fame cornerback on those teams, and a black man in a virtually entirely white town who said, "I loved my Father, but I don't think about him everyday. Not a day goes by that I do not think of Coach Lombardi." He went to play in Dallas later and had considerably less kind things to say about their nearly as legendary coach, Tom Landry, or the local politic. Green Bay may be all white but was never racist to the extent those players would find in other outposts in nearly any big city, certainly in the south. I mean whatever sports operative had a connection to the hotline of President Kennedy, which, to my recollection, was held by only one other man, Soviet Premier Kruschev.

Well I read that when it was a brand new book in 1970, even given things like Fear Strikes Out by Jimmy Piersall it was the first tell all book, with the benefit of a 40 year rear view mirror not even any longer certain that was a good thing. Within that year that I turned 14 still had near total certainty of my own future as a major league ballplayer, to this day the only thing I ever really wanted to do, so this was a year or two before I could be considered in most senses a hippie. Then came coaches I just about hated, very potent LSD made that mitt slide right off my hand and just go out wandering in April of 72.

So anyway after much celebration and imbibing of alcohol after the Palace win against Watford at Wembley which sees us in the Premier league, at least for a season and £120 million in the club's coffers, I'm now gradually getting back to important matters at hand. Hipflaskandy/Duncan and myself finally met up for a short time last week as he was in the area performing at a folk festival in Bude, just up the coast from us. It was good to met Duncan after "talking" to each other on the Forum and although he took a much better photo of us together, I thought "what the hell" and this is us taken with the aid of the large mirror we have in our front room. Apologies by the way for the foliage Cheers Duncan - it was good to meet you.

That looks really creepy like a modern day piped piper who's lost his flute and can't lure the teenagers into his lair in the forest

My dwelling place shown last night on BBC2 with the impressive and genial Nicholas Crane. Let's hope nothing is stirred next week to spoil it's tranquility. Yes I know I keep saying I'm bored here however I have to admit it is rather beautiful and unique.
Town- Nicholas Crane - Enniskillen

Just discovered yet another link with the celtic countries of Ireland and Spain.
The castle was built by one of the gaelic chieftains of the Maguire clan - the rulers of the Fermanagh region in the fourteenth century.
The first inhabitant - Hugh the Hospitable welcomed Bards and wandering musicians and the place had a romantic history as a pilgimage route to the islands on Lough Erne.
Hugh’s death took place in Kinsale in county Cork as he returned with his nephew from a pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint James at Compostella in Spain- a major historical pilgrimage route since the Early Middle Ages.
Grey the mist cold the dawn Cruel the sea and stern the shore~

HAPPY FATHERS DAYTo all you Loveable Grumps everywhere Thank you Patti. I'm usually not that grumpy unless I can't play some Tull every day. I have one son that helped me celebrate on Friday with Rib-eye steaks and baked potatoes. Every day is Father's Day to me.

Actually it's the Forum's default avatar 'cos the proboards default avatar is a rather nasty looking bald headed alien. We don't change member's avatars here unless they request us to do so but in the meantime all member's have the default IA on one leg image if they haven't chosen their own one. If anyone wants to change their avatar all you have to do is click on their personal profile and then click on edit profile and you'll see the function to change avatars to their own one. If help is needed them PM me or any of the other moderators with an image they want to use and we'll change it for you. MD

HAPPY FATHERS DAYTo all you Loveable Grumps everywhere
I got ALMOST sweet FA for Fathers' Day, nothing, diddley squat, zilch, except a whole week-end of gardening at my late dads' house which the previous tenants didn't do. The grass was about 2 feet high, borders not weeded, you get the picture, oh yeah, it rained most of the time and muggins got soaked. Hey ho, Tull and Robin Trower fixed my grumpiness when I got home.

Seeing what Patti/Non Rabbit places beneath this reminds me of how incredible and worthy a Tull video she could make. Regularly disturbed by the lack of imagination shown by those who do take the time to post on You Tube, a particular distaste for videos of the band not showing the version of the band recording it. Unless its 1980. The less seen of some, though not all, of the pictures from that year, the better. I certainly remember the delicious bit Patti did with one of my favorites, Flying Dutchman on her MySpace page, cannot recall the imagery, but I remember the light rainfall before it. There is an excellent version of that and maybe 4 others I would give that grade on You Tube, but most remains undeveloped. On the one hand I like the idea of this video, my favorite part of Passion Play sandwiched around one of my favorite Tull tunes, but why include only a picture of a 1969 Ian. I realize that those who mark Passion Play as their favorite or one of them would not have a similar perception, but those bits coming into and out of the Hare are the only ones I have enjoyed with regularity in those 40 years. Oh sure I like this bit or that bit, the first 3 minutes, All along the Icy wastes, (though not always the instrumental breakout that follows) the first 5 minutes or so of side 2. Otherwise I will apparently always mark alot of it as suffering a bit too much of look at me, I'm an intellectual, something I find the Minstrel album occasionally guilty of too. And of course on any particular day I might find either record to be the very best thing they have ever done, and either might be. Perplexing Tull.

"Yes. But you are living amongst better sources of healthcare. Actually since Florian started playing all the time, my hair loss has decreased. His guitar seems to give me new hope for a cure." - (Working with the Flo flow) Jim
