What links Tull and the Spice Girls? www.edinburghfestivals.co.uk/news/jazz-round"There had been some controversy amongst hardcore jazz fans over the brief appearance of former Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm alongside Peter Vettese, the ex-Jethro Tull keyboardist. The two of them performed three songs together at Assembly@Princes Street Gardens, delighting their audience and offering a confident riposte to their critics."

I think its fair if not necessary to say whoever wrote that would not know jazz, let alone hard core jazz if it bit them in the arse.

Whilst acknowledging that to many, John Evans was THE Tull keyboard player, probably followed by Andy Giddings, Peter Vetesse's influence played a huge part in the "electronic" Tull, and hands up who doesn't like Fly By Night.
His fingerprints are all over many a top tune of the last twenty years.

AG was good but Vetesse blew him out of the water IMO. I wish that he would have stayed aboard. What a creative counterpart to Ian he was.

I wish that he would have stayed aboard. What a creative counterpart to Ian he was. He was, and one of the most influential band members with regard to pointing IA in the direction of new technology and sounds. However it will always be a mute point as to who was the "best" keyboard player depending on listener's preference and any one particular album. Sure, PJV was instrumental in the creativity surrounding Walk Into Light etc, John Evans from Benefit to Stormwatch, AG with later albums (I still love Dot Com btw) and even Maartin Allcock who I would admit was not a keyboard player as such but who brought so much humour to the band, along with Dave Pegg, which is missing from the line up today. And let's not forget Eddie Jobson's part in all this and even, although many will disagree, Don Airey who I feel got a bit of a raw deal, but then that's my opinion. They've all been great with many many happy memories. As to who was the best - I don't know but one thing I'm sure of and that is if a met them all today I'd buy them all a drink and thank them for their input and musicianship over the years. Oh, and I'd buy all the other members of the band a drink as well and thank them too, even Dave Pegg who'd probably squeeze more than one drink out of me

Yeah, isn't buying Pegg a drink what you people call 'coals to newcastle'? I agree that every single ex-Tullie brought something to the picnic...I mean, we agree that Ian is a raher demanding and discerning taskmaster, despite early year non-Martin auditions being favored toward schoolmates...so it should be no surprise that musicians he plucked from the ranks of warm up bands or music world reputation had something more than unemployment checks going for them.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Don Airey in a pub called the Crown and Cushion, in Great Gransden, Cambridgeshire, about 12 years ago. Don lives in the village, ( maybe still does ) and I'd been tipped off that he went into the pub with a keyboard on Boxing Day evening, handed out carol sheets, and after a rousing few of those, played whatever you requested. I had a natter with him, at the cost of a pint, about his time with Colosseum II and Tull.
Then had a boozy sing.

The dog's right...no fair teasing! Tell Tull Tales...It was Don Airey. according to New Day, that absorbed the Tull catalog via motel room walls from Richie Blackmore's stereo.

Just noticed the reply to my contribution.
Don Airey was playing with Colosseum when I saw them, with Jon Hiseman, Gary Moore and John Mole, who , having Googled just now, I see he died a few years ago. They were promoting an album called War Dance, and I went to see them on the strength of having seen footage of Jon Hiseman playing drums and having one of the biggest kits I ever saw. In fact how they ever got it all into Eric's in Liverpool, I will never know. Their musician ship was amazing, but what I remembered, and told Don about this when I was nattering to him in the pub years later, was that Gary Moore snapped a string on his guitar, but just re-arranged where he was playing, and carried on, almost without missing a beat. AND DON REMEMBERED THIS!
I asked him if he minded talking about his stint with Tull, and he was keen to say that despite what many people may have thought, he was never sacked from the band. He was "contracted" to play on the Crest of a Knave tour, but never asked to carry on.....the reference to this in AND was confirmed by the man himself. He did indeed learn the Tull songs he needed to play from the sheet music. Have to say, he was a really nice chap, very down to earth, and patient enough to endure a slightly tipsy Tull fan singing songs from Oliver on a memorable Boxing Day evening.

Interview 2016 - not a lot of Tull. Great comments about Peter Hasn't he changed? I would probably walk past him in the street without recognising him now. This is how I remember him. Found this one on the net.

He was making it go "widdle warble wah wah" and all that silly stuff. Looked about the same.

Link to PJ Vettese's recently updated web page. My view is that he is probably the ex Tull musician that has accomplished (regarding hit records, etc.) the most of any since leaving Tull. He co wrote songs on Annie Lennox's massive selling Diva album and also co wrote Heather Small's hit "proud". The web site shows what he had done in the past and what he is up to now.. A talented guy... peterjohnvettese.co.uk

www.rollingstone.com/Yusuf/Cat Stevens Re-Records ‘Tea for the Tillerman’ for 50th Anniversary“We knew we were coming up to the 50th birthday of the friendly face, Tillerman,” says Yusuf, “and we wanted to do something special for him” By ANDY GREENE This November will mark the 50th anniversary of Cat Stevens’ landmark album Tea for the Tillerman, which features “Wild World,” “Father and Son,” “Where Do the Children Play?” and other classics. To celebrate, the songwriter (who now records under the name Yusuf) has re-recorded the entire album with original producer Paul Samwell-Smith and original guitarist Alun Davies. -------------------------------------------- We got some other great musicians to play with us. Peter Vettese plays the keyboards. He’s been with Jethro Tull and is a spectacular musician. Another real great multi-instrumentalist is Kwame [Yeboah] from Ghana. My God, he does anything you can imagine. The guitarist as well, Eric Appapoulay. Jim Cregan too. He was with Rod Stewart once.link

In this interview composer and musician Peter Vettese waxes lyrical on his time as a session musicain, his love for jazz and his time in Jethro Tull, including Ian Anderson getting pissed off when 'Hunting Girl' was screwed up on stage, Ian Anderson's vocal problems, the mix and sound of 'Under Wraps' and his rig on 'Broadsword and the Beast'.

How wonderful it was for me to meet up with Dee Palmer (left) and Clive Bunker (right) yesterday. Dee let me hear her sensational string arrangements and we enjoyed improvising compositions on piano predicated on the notes generated by her cooker hood (which also bore witness to the production of a very tasty lunch). Clive is soon to be lending his groove-a-mungus talents in the drum chair of the Martin Barre band. The common thread? We are all past members of Jethro Tull. An inspirational and heart warming get together! Dee Palmer Peter-John Vettese Clive Bunker
