Roughly what year did he write this? Blues For The 18thAll my dreams are insecure, Thoughts all gone, which once were sure, I've awaken to something I thought would never come along, as in a dream. Letting you go. Letting you go. Softly rising yesterday, I did swear, I heard you say, You're going, knowing, I'll be left crying in the sun, as in a dream. Letting you go. Letting you go. Holding tightly, hurting soul, Take me with you when you go, I'm bleeding, needing, someone to take me by my hand, as in a dream. Letting you go. Letting you go.

One of Ian’s letters to me gives an account of his somewhat frustrated experience recording this demo. It was the first recording JEB ever made. I doubt the letter would be dated. The B side was Aeroplane. I think I posted a reference to it here sometime ago. There were only five copies and Ian gave me one of them at the Sunbury Jazz Blues Festival, so the studio recording must have taken place not that long before August 1968? Not absolutely sure of dates off the top of my head. I glanced at a list of the early gigs yesterday and reminded myself that I was only 16 when I first met/saw Ian play at The Blackpool Grammar School for boys on the 20th of December 1965, quite a few years before the recording. So it was a relatively long time gigging before they got to make their first demo.

Thank you for making me listen to Blues for the 18th with fresh ears. I love Summer Day Sands, too.....it must be a broken off piece of longer Requiem or Baker Street muse, no?

"Romance" as in a place that inspires feelings of love and happiness. September, one of our loveliest months in Scotland with winter just around the corner. Along the coast road,by the headland the early lights of winter glow. Isle of Kerrera, Scotland

A more recent Song and technically not Tull that deserves mention is Postcard Day. That’s a beauty!

nonrabbit, i'm not up to dirty voting at all here. I really do think that Fires At Midnight is one of the least romantic songs on this list - at any rate, in my view, I don't think it deserves to be given the title of the most romantic Tull song ever. Jeff, I totally agree with your earlier comments- in fact, you got me thinking about this song... The guy in this song is just singing about a love for his homely comforts. Perhaps a window separates this song from the previous epic track, Pibroch? Mr. Pibroch - man of un-requited love - peers through this window - however, Fires At Mignight is the view from the other side of that window - inside that house with strange boots in the hallway, strange slippers by the fire. Where are the children in this song? The dogs have been fed - no children sent off to bed. A "broken gun beneath the bed" ? - mmmmm...I wonder what this could mean? Sexually dysfunctional marriage? Outside the window - "frogs and newts slip in the dark" - frogs have long been considered a symbol of fertility. These are not metaphorical fires at midnight representing a passionate love. "Go upstairs … take off your makeup fold your clothes neatly away." - indeed this suggests that the character in this song controls his trophy wife - the beauty from the "woods" that he stole from Mr. Pibroch perhaps? Perhaps Mr Pibroch knows this - just another reason why "each step he takes is one half of a lifetime". "Me, I'll sit and write this love song as I all too seldom do" - which is precisely what he doesn't do. It isn't really a love song - it's a song about wanting to write a love song. If anything, this guy is just in love with himself and his own homely comforts. Perhaps the man in this song could even be the protagonist from Pibroch? Trapped in a cold marriage - consumed by sorrow and sadness for the girl who left him for someone else. On a good night, after drinking some golden toddy, this is the best he can come up with... not much of a love song if you ask me! This song is perhaps a reminder that the magical world of the "wood" - a world of whistlers, jacks in the green, whistlers and hunting girls is not part of the real world. We must attend to the harsh realities of life - symbolised perhaps by this guy burning a midnight fire with logs taken from the magical "wood" of the albums title. He's burning the wood down with his Fires At Midnight! It's never been a favourite song of mine - I think it is one of Ian's weakest songs lyrically. However, it is a nice song with strong atmosphere - an interesting song. As I say though, it's never been a favourite of mine. I think Weathercock is a far superior closing track (and more romantic). Home is a much better song about homely comforts (and more romantic). Just my two cents on this. Brian. I wouldn't consider Fires as one the least romantic songs on the list. I love this song, as I explained before, for it's romantic homeliness. Taking your point that it seems controlling- I totally disagree with that. I think he is acknowledging her habits and not asserting his "rules." There's nothing to suggest that she is unhappy with her lot.... I like the link you mention about the character from Pibroch and this song. The bloke in Pibroch (imo) is looking at what he lost and he has deep regrets with his "long heavy walk" I also like the flames and passion idea as well I never thought of that one before so you have given me another reason to like Fires The bit about the gun well that could bring in what your views are on killing animals because thats as far I would get as to the reason why there's a gun beneath the bed. The setting both in the house and outside the window is the nailer for me on this song too. I did originally think of it as a croft but as stairs are mentioned then it's probably a rich Victorian detached house in the Highlands No need to to apologise Jeff n Brian for disagreeing with me - I can take it - I love the explanations ! Ps Can't wait for the collective thoughts on Aqualung lyrics and the like! I'm reading pages of this decade-old thread and was waiting for someone to set the record straight on Fire at Midnight. To think this is chauvinistic is a "the glass is half empty" way of looking at it. That's exactly right. He is "acknowledging HER habits and not asserting HIS rules". She is the polar opposite of the Hunting Girl, who would allow no man to control her. My missus, for example, in our heyday, would be fighting me off from pawing at her, while she straightened everything up and washed the tea cups and took out the trash. While I "raised the flag that she unfurled", she's wiping off the countertop. It reminded me of that. Some people just need to have everything in order before they become intimate. Now, "She bent down to fill the ice box and stuffed some more warm white wine in." is another thing altogether. This poll is great. Terrific reading and very thought-provoking.
