Beat Instrumental was a "glossy" UK magazine which ran from 1963 (as Beat Monthly) up until around 1980. Jethro Tull featured in it quite a lot, especially around 1969, and were on the cover a few times. So in no particular order, here is an issue from December 1969 with the one and only Joe Cocker on the cover. More to come over the next few weeks.

September 1969 October 1969 Btw, I have been asked where I got these issues of Beat Intrumental from and their availabilty now. I used to get the magazine every month between 1965 and 1970/71 so these are original issues from my collection and the ones I've posted here are the ones I have with a Tull connection. There are a couple more issues which I'll post soon, one with a very well known cover. As for their availabilty now I'll have a look on ebay 'cos I know that there were some later ones which I have not got which contain articles on Tull, Blodwyn Pig, Mick Abrahams etc.

A nice response from Glenn Cornick about this thread.
Very cool. Actually I have copies of practically all the B.I.'s from that time period. Glenn

I fondly remember B.I. mag - used to get it all the time - sadly I never kept any. Do you remember this one, MadDog? I still have just the one from the 80s. I believe I started getting this one after the demise of B.I. I wonder if this one ceased, too?

I believe I started getting this one after the demise of B.I. I wonder if this one ceased, too? I remember it along with a host of "inkies" and "gossies". Haven't seen it around for a long time so I reckon it's bitten the dust. BI was always a good mag, especially late 60s/early 70s, as they regularly featured Tull/Blodwyn Pig and loads of other decent bands. Kept a fair few of my BIs which escaped the ravages of water leaks and age - the secret is to keep them in an hermatically sealed vault under the nearest mountain with 24 hour guards.

My thanks to fritz12 for sending me this article from Beat Instrumental from December 1976. The scans are xerox photocopies of the original and as such don't show the images that well but I've managed to find a colour scan of the cover so this is included. If you're interested in Tull's PA system from that time and the input to its design by Chris Amson, then read on. Great article from 1976 This was the year I first worked with a local band. Thanks MD. If only I could have been a TULL Roadie !
